I am now showing some work at a great coffee shop in Memphis in the Cooper Young District, called Otherlands Coffee. It is a cool artistic venue with a super fun vibe. My work will be up for about six weeks. I am so excited and pumped about my work being there. Thank you Otherlands!

On Saturday, August 29th I got the great privilege of demonstrating my craft at the Crafts Center in Ridgeland. I worked on a stitched piece I am working on of a gingerbread style house on canvas. It is made of fabric. The center is so beautiful and full of light and wonderful crafts from Mississippi craftsmen. I was honored to be there!

I am gearing up to go to John C. Campbell Folk School to teach sewing next week, but wanted to let you know about a new class I will be teaching for younger students. It is coming up at Communiversity. Vanessa Cook came up with a precious photo/ad for the class.

Sewing Linings, sewing

Sewing in lining can be a great skill to learn. Today I taught a student how to line a simple a line style dress using a pattern from Children’s Corner. It is simple enough for my teenage student to figure out though I do think the lining instructions are a bit tricky if you do not have someone to guide you. But lining can be tricky anyway regardless of the pattern. I showed her how to clip the curves and we are now ready to finish hand-sewing in the lining. I chose to have her machine sew the outer seams into the lining a bit and then we will hand sew both lining seams by hand on the inside. This is a little easier than trying to sew the one inner seam by machine. I will try and get pictures when we finish up. Overall, an easy pattern to learn lining on.

Basic Sewing Classes

I love this pink flyer for my upcoming basic sewing class coming up at communiversity. I will teach what all those knobs are on the machine, how to put in a zipper, machine stitch buttonholes and more!

Last year I wanted to make some little Valentine happies to sell at the Oxford Fiber Arts Festival. It was so much fun that I have continued to do it again this year. These are a super way to use up little bits of paper, fabric and trims. I like to stamp on fabric strips to add the text and sew most of the cards on the machine. It won’t hurt the machine. All you need to do is switch the needle out when you go to sewing fabric again as it will dull the needle a bit. I usually use a size 14. If you are worried the material will move while sewing, you can use fusible web to iron it down-fusible hemming tape is already cut into strips making it easy to use. Just use a press cloth so you do not burn the card. I usually just wing it but I did try the web to see if it would work for those who like more control while sewing. This would also be good for beginner sewers.

These are small so they are quick to make. I use already made blank cards. You can get them at most craft stores. You could also cut cardstock to fit envelopes you have on hand as well. Be sure to sign them on the back with a sharpie pen. They are little works of art.
